Start Date: Position to be filled immediately End Date: August 2012 (position will possibly be extended) Location: The Bakersfield Field Office has stewardship responsibility for approximately 1.7 million acres of public land in and around the southern Sierra Nevadas. Compensation: 1300/month stipend. Housing is not provided. Position Description: The primary goal of this internship is to gather GIS data and other information on the condition and locations of Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) incursions along the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT) from State Highway 138 in Los Angeles County, north to Walker Pass to State Highway 178, west of Ridgecrest, California. The Intern, partnered with the Program Lead Intern, will complete a detailed trail condition assessment that includes the development of a data dictionary collection of trail and route data and document OHV incursions on and adjacent to the PCT. This inventory will serve as the basis for future restoration projects along the trail will provide data to develop detailed GIS maps and will provide guidance for future projects on the PCT. Interns will complete the inventory along 130 miles of the PCT and adjacent lands managed by the BLM-Ridgecrest Field Office and the Sequoia National Forest. The interns will develop a work plan at the beginning of the project with input from an interdisciplinary team. Project Background and Objectives: The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) runs from the Mexican to Canada, spans three states (California, Oregon, and Washington) and crosses national monuments, national parks, national forests, Bureau of Land Management public lands, federally designated wilderness, state and county parks and tribal lands. The trail traverses 2,650 miles, and boasts the greatest elevation changes in the National Trail system. By law, since its designation in 1968, the Pacific Crest Trail is closed to motorized and mechanized vehicle use. In the mountains west of the Mojave Desert, 130 miles of the trail are managed by the BLM, Ridgecrest Field Office. Several areas of this segment of the trail are impacted by unauthorized OHV use. This project is designed to supplement law enforcement and trail maintenance projects with a detailed inventory and specific information that will facilitate the incorporation of restoration into the suite of available trail management techniques into this challenging but very interesting segment of the PCT managed by BLM. Authoring technical literature such as: white papers, QOI, Standard Works, Engineering Bulletins, FQR and Failure Analysis Reports. Regularly monitoring and reporting on quality, productivity and service level ensuring that goals are met or exceeded.
